Iran will never seek nuclear weapons: Rohani

Iranian President Hassan Rohani said in an interview with a U.S. television network days before he travels to New York for a UN meeting that his country would never seek nuclear weapons.
Iran has repeatedly announced “Under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we,” said Rohani, who took office on Aug. 4, in the interview with Ann Curry of NBC News aired last night. “We have never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb, and we are not going to do so.”
Rohani reiterated Iran’s longstanding position that its uranium enrichment and related programs are for peaceful purposes.
He said the tone of a letter he had received from US President Barack Obama, congratulating him on his election, was positive and constructive.
The Iranian nation chose the path of moderation in the recent presidential election and moderation in foreign policy means positive interaction with the world, the president said.
Rohani is scheduled to make his first appearance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.
